Although Collinsville High’s first official
varsity wrestling match was not held until the 1970-71 Season, a group of 26
juniors and sophomores competed in seven "exhibition" meets during the
1969-70 season. With Tom Miofsky as their head coach and Larry Donaldson
serving as an assistant coach, the young Kahok squad posted a 1-6 record,
defeating Western Military 44-8 while losing to such established teams as
Alton, Edwardsville, Cahokia, and Riverview Gardens. Mike Welle had the
standout individual effort of the season, placing second at 115 pounds in
the Mascoutah Tourney.
The first varsity meet with school board sanction
was held December 10, 1970 at the Vandalia campus and resulted in a 48-8
Kahok victory over Triad, which was also participating in its first varsity
meet. Under coach Mario Balettie the Kahoks recorded a 4-5 mark in their
first season, winning three of their final four meets. The Kahoks placed a
strong third in the Vandalia Tourney, just two points back of the host team,
which took the title. Dennis Cozier placed third in the District meet at 119
pounds and Larry Simpson took fourth at 155. The Kahoks posted a 5-7-2 record in 1971-72 with
Mark Milster (112) taking a third and John Correll (167) a fourth at
Districts. Joe Spurgeon took over as coach in 1972-73 and the
Kahoks posted winning marks during the next four seasons; 10-7, 12-9, 14-7,
and 13-6. Ed Lasich (167) became the first Kahok to advance to
Sectional competition in the 1973-74 season on the basis of a second place
finish in the District meet. Collinsville’s first tournament championship
came in 1974-75 when the Kahoks won the Alton, IL Invitational Wrestling
Tournament. Hector Sanabria (145) became the first Kahok to win
a District title (1975-76) and Ben Bolt (126) won the Kahoks first Sectional
Championship. Bolt and Sanabria became the first Collinsville wrestlers to
qualify for the State Tournament. Tom Correll won a District title at 119 in 1976-77
and the Kahoks had two District champions in 1977-78, Brad Vacca (167) and
Dave Gaumer (HWT). Correll finished third in Sectionals in 1976-77 and
Gaumer fourth in 1977-78. Jerry Davis took over the head coaching reins in
1978-79, Tom Harvengt (155) became the fifth Kahok to win a Regional title
and the third Kahok to advance to the state meet. Harvengt placed second in
the Sectional Tournament. The 1979-80 season saw Mike Kleb become the fourth
Kahok to qualify for the state meet and the first underclassmen to do so.
The sophomore heavyweight placed second in both the Regional and Sectional
Tournaments. George Portz became the Kahoks fourth head coach as
the 1981-82 season got under way. Henry Levy (167) and Mike Kleb (HWT) won
Regional Titles and Kleb proceeded to capture the Sectional Championship.
Kleb is the highest placing Kahok at the State Tourney to date (4th place).
Kleb also set Kahok career records for most victories (73) and most pins
(62). The 62 career falls are listed in the top 10 in the State. The 1981-82
team recorded their first-ever Kahok dual meet shutout, 63-0 over Wood
River. The 1982-83 season produced a new record for the
fastest pin, 98 lb. Jay Austin (:10). Henry Levy (167) became the first
Kahok to win two consecutive Regional Championships. Levy also became the
Kahoks tenth career Sectional place-winner (4th). Four Sectional qualifiers highlighted the 1983-84
season, with Paul Vogt (119) placing third in the Regional and Sectional
meets. Vogt became the sixth Kahok State qualifier while Brian Martin (112)
placed fourth at Sectionals. Chuck Hayden (HWT) and Billy Wiley (185) were
Regional runner-ups. The 1984-85 season yielded the Kahoks an inspired
11-9 dual meet record, their first winning season since 1975-76. Billy Wiley
(185) became the Kahoks’ ninth Regional Champion. The 1985-86 team shattered sixteen individual and
team records on the way to a 15 dual meet win season. Steve Vogt (138)
captured the Kahoks’ tenth career Regional Title while a third place
Sectional finish earned Vogt a State qualifying berth. The 1986-87 Kahok edition finished with a 15-7 dual
meet record and produced two Regional Champions, Paul Hayes (105) and Frank
Clapp (HWT), along with six additional Sectional qualifiers. Steve Vogt
(145) won a Sectional Championship and a return to State. Two Regional Champions, Todd Blaylock (138) and
Rocky Maxville (155) helped lead the 1987-88 team to its fourth consecutive
winning season. Rocky Maxville (155) won a fourth place medal at the
Sectional Tournament. The 1988-89 Kahok squad proved to be the most
prolific pinners in our history to date (159). Their finest dual meet record
to date (18-6) produced twelve new Kahok records and 5 IHSA State records.
Rocky Maxville (160) won his second Regional Title, a third place medal at
the Sectionals, and a 7th/8th place finish in the State meet. New records by
Maxville were set in Single Season Wins (42) and Career Wins (108). Tony
Capizzi (112) ended his fine career second on the All-Time Win List (88) and
Corey Jones led the squad in falls (24).
The 1989-90 season
closed the decade with a sixth consecutive winning dual meet season (17-7).
A second place Regional finish produced an all-time high of nine Sectional
qualifiers. Steve Trimble (140) became the Kahoks Tenth State qualifier
with a third place medal at the Sectional Tourney. Steve wrestled to a Top
Twelve showing at the State meet. Kevin Smith (112) won a Sectional fourth
place medal. Steve Rogers (103) became the first Kahok Freshman to win over
twenty varsity matches in a season (24). 1990-91 was
highlighted with some major milestones. The Kahoks captured their first
Regional Championship with the help of an all-time four Regional Champions,
John Kane (135), Matt Will (140), Steve Trimble (145), and Jamie Miller (HWT).
Steve Trimble won a 4th place medal at Sectionals. A fine dual
meet season (18-6) tied the school record for Most Dual Meet Victories. The 1991-92 season
produced another fine dual meet team (16-7). CHS gained their first-ever
win over conference power Blv. West (34-30) and their first Litchfield
Tournament Championship. Steve Rogers (112) and Mike Delisle (103) won 1st
Place at the Mascoutah Tourney. Mike Delisle won more matches (36) & pins
(23) ever for a freshman. Mike also set a school record with five tourney
Championships during 91-92. Two Regional Championships by Mike Delisle
(103) and Eric Rensing (171) and five other Sectional Qualifiers eventually
led to Two State Qualifiers. Mike Delisle and Jamie Miller won 3rd
Place medals at Sectionals. Miller (HWT) wrestled to a Top Twelve showing
at the State meet in Champaign. The 1992-93 season
provided a 2nd Place Conference finish due to a tie with Blv.
West (29-29) and a win against Blv. East (39-19). A 16-6-1 Dual Meet record
produced three Regional Champions (Delisle, Rogers, Franke) and an all-time
CHS high of 4 State Qualifiers 112-Mike Delisle (3rd);119-Steve
Rogers (2nd); 125-Billy Franke (2nd); 135-Jason Luther
(3rd). Mike Delisle wrestled into the Top Twelve at the State
Tourney. Steve Rogers capped
off a fine CHS career by setting a number of school records; Career
Victories-117; Career TD-199 and Career Team Points-574. 1993-94 season
completed a full decade of winning seasons as that years’ squad finished
with a 16-6-1 record. Mike Delisle (119) and Mike Jones (112) won Regional
Championships and led a total of six into the Sectional Tourney. Mike
Delisle finished third at the Sectional meet and became the first-ever
3-time qualifier (CHS) for the State Meet. Delisle won a Fifth Place medal
at the State meet, CHS’ first State Place Winner since 1981-82. Many milestones were
reached during the 1994-95 Season, including a 3rd place finish
at the prestigious Mascoutah Tournament. A 17-7 Season produced 3 Regional
Champions and a school record 11 Sectional Qualifiers. Mike Delisle (125)
finished his fine career with a Regional Championship (his fourth), a 2nd
Place Sectional Medal and his fourth consecutive State Tournament berth.
Mike set school career record in Wins (151), Falls (83), TD (221) and Team
Points (764). Two Freshman
Sectional Qualifiers highlighted the 1995-96 Wrestling Season. Kenny Lutz
(27 wins) and Marc Justice (25 wins) led the team to a 14-6 Dual Meet
Record. The team earned their 5th Playoff berth in the past 7
years. Marc Justice (119) and Tony Ostendorf (HWT) won Regional
Championships. Senior Keith Ward’s (135) 3rd Place finish at the
Sectional Tournament earned him a berth in the State Tournament. A tie of a previous
school record of 4 State Qualifiers, Marc Justice (125), Nick Delisle (135),
Kenny Lutz (189), Tony Ostendorf (HWT); and our first Sectional Champion,
Nick Delisle (135) since 1986-87, highlighted the 1996-97 Wrestling Season.
A 51-15 Victory over Jerseyville earned the wrestling program our 300th
All-Time Win. The 16-5-1 Kahoks defeated both Blv. East (40-22) and Blv.
West (32-24) for the first time in school history. Another school record
was set with five 30-match winners: Rob Berger (31), Nick Delisle (36),
Marc Justice (37), Kenny Lutz (36) and Tony Ostendorf (37). The 1997-98 Season
was the CHS program’s 14th Consecutive Winning Season (15-8). A
1st place finish in the Regional Tournament qualified the team
for the Dual Meet Championship, which was won by Edwardsville 42-30. Three
Regional Champions (Allison, Dudley, & Lutz) led a contingent of 6 Sectional
Qualifiers to Springfield. Kenny Lutz (215) won a Sectional Championship,
while Jason Dudley (145) also qualified for the State Tournament with a 3rd
place Sectional finish. Josh Allison (112) and Marc Justice (125) won 4th
place Sectional medals. Kenny Lutz placed 4th at the State
Tournament and set new CHS school records for the Most Wins (44), Most Falls
(33) and Most Team Points (242). Allen Kirgan took
over the Kahok wrestling program for the 1998-99 season. It was the 15th
consecutive year they completed a winning season with a 10-9 mark. Some
school records were set as Kenny Lutz became the first ever two-time State
place winner with his 6th place finish. In addition, Kenny
became the career leader in falls with 93, takedowns with 254 and team
points with 771. Marc Justice moved into 2nd in both team points
(757) and takedowns with 226. During the 1999-00
season Mark Kristoff took over for Allen Kirgan as the Kahoks finished 3-17
in Dual meets. David Seaton placed third in Regionals and advanced to
Sectionals. Tom Blaha took over
the head coaching reigns in 2000-01. He becomes the 7th coach in
history, and brings with him two talented coaches in TJ Slay and Pete
Trapp. The Kahoks finished their season with a 7-13 Dual meet record and
look to improve next year with 21 kids returning. The year was highlighted
by sophomore Terry King placing 2nd in Regionals and 4th
in Sectionals. The Kahok wrestlers
continue to improve with an 8-12 dual meet record for the 2001-02 year. The
year was highlighted with three regional placers, Donny Cary 103 4th,
Terry King 215 4th and Sectional qualifier Eric Mcmillan 152
placed 2nd.Individual records improved tremendously with seven 15
match winners, six of which will return next year. The 2002-03 team
became the 20th winning team in history with a 12-7 record. The
year was highlighted with two sectional qualifiers, Donny Cary and Terry
king. Terry also qualified for state by placing second in sectionals. Terry
also became 7th on the all time list for wins with 100, 9th
for 51 pins, 6th for 538 team points, and 5th with 177
takedowns. This years team set a new record for most 1st
takedowns at 197. The 2003-04 team
became the 21st winning team in History with back to back winning
seasons for the first time since the 99 season. The year was highlighted
with two sectional qualifiers, Eric Schellhardt and James Porter. James also
placed 4th in Sectionals and was the 1st Regional
Champion since 99. Donny Cary became 13th on the all time list
for wins with 73, 10th for 49 pins, He also set a record for most
career 1st takedowns with 64. BJ Mcnally set a record for the
fastest pin in history with a :09 second pin. The 2004-05 Team is
the 3rd winning team in a row for Coach Blaha becoming the 22nd
winning team in history. The year was highlighted with two sectional
qualifiers, Eric Schellhardt and Nasir ghaidi. Nasir ghaidi was 5th
on the all time list with 24 pins in a year, Eric schellhardt was 7th
all time in career takedowns. William Carvelot also set the record for the
fastest fall in history in :08 seconds. The 2005-06 Team is
the 4th Winning team in a row for Coach Blaha becoming the 23rd
winning team in history. The year was highlighted with 5 sectional
qualifiers, Eric Smith, Anthony Rodriguez, Justin Straub, Ryan Robinson, and
Andy Springer. Justin Straub also qualified for the State tournament. Eric
Smith became the 41st Regional Champ and 15th all time
in wins. Eric also was 5th all time for career takedowns with
178. Ryan Robinson set the freshman pin record with 25, which is 4th
best. William Carvelot had 23 pins to break into the top ten. The team also
set a record for most 1st takedowns with 238. The 15-6 record was
the best since 1998. The team also had 8 20-match winners with 7 returning
next year. The 2006-07 Team was
the year for BREAKING RECORDS. We finished the year with a 19-3 campaign,
which were both new school records. We had our 5th winning season
in a row, which is the 24th winning team in history. The year was
highlighted with 11 sectional qualifiers, which tied another School Record.
Other Team Records that were Broken are most victories-348, most pins-232,
most 1st Takedowns-279, Most Takedowns-745, most Dual
Points-1118, most team points-1996.5 and largest margin of Victory(Waterloo
81-0) Justin Straub qualified for the State tournament for the second time
and was joined by Junior Andrew Springer and Sophomore Ryan Robinson. Justin
Straub and Jacob Hess became the 42nd and 43rd
Regional Champs. Individual Records were also set: Justin Straub tied the
record for fewest losses-2, best winning percentage-947 and most takedowns
in a season-114. Ryan Robinson set the record for most pins in a year-35 and
most 1st takedowns in a year-38 and most 1st takedowns
in a career with 68. William Carvelot was 13th all time in wins
in a career and 5th all time for pins in a career with 61. He
also still holds the record for fastest pin in:08. Justin Straub was 10th
all time for wins in a career-85, he was also 9th all time for
team points with 451.5 and 5th all-time with 188 takedowns. Brent
Camillo is 9th all time with 161 career takedowns and Ryan
Robinson is 6th all time with 60 wins by pin. Jason Mezo had 23
pins to break into the top ten. The 2007-08 Team was
another year of BREAKING RECORDS. We finished the year with a 19-3 record to
tie last year’s records. We had our 6th winning season in a row,
which is the 25th winning team in history. The year was
highlighted by the first Regional Championship since 1991. Team Records that
were broken were Most victories-373, most 1st takedowns-296, most
takedowns-871, most team points-2121, most regional champions-5 and the most
Sectional Champions-2 (Andrew Springer and Ryan Robinson). Ryan Robinson and
Andrew Springer qualified for the state tournament for the second time and
were joined by Anthony Rodriguez. Individual records were also set: Demarco
Dugan set the record for most takedowns in a season-184, most 1st
takedowns-39 and most career takedowns-269. Daniel Mueller set the record
for quickest fall-:07, Ryan Robinson became 8th all-time in
career wins with 97 and holds the record for most 1st takedowns
in a career with-95, he also is 2nd all-time with 83 falls, 10th
in takedowns in a career-168 and 4th with 638.5 career team
points. Andrew Springer set a record for most team points-278. he also
became 2nd all time for wins in a year-42, he became 11th
all-time with 86 wins, 7th all time with 554 team points, 9th
all time with 54 falls and had 24 falls to break into the top ten. Andy and
Ryan also both placed in the state tournament, Andrew-6th and
Ryan-2nd. Ryan was the first State Finalist in Collinsville
History and this was the first time in history that Collinsville had 2
placers in the same year. We also set a record for the most 30 match winners
with 6, (Nolberto-32, Rodriguez-31, Dugan-35, Hess-30, Mueller-32, and
Springer-42). The 2008-09 Team
finished the year 10-10 to break the string of 6 winning seasons in a row.
The year was highlighted by Ryan Robinson placing for the second year in a
row at the state tournament with a 3rd place medal. Ryan is only
the second wrestler in history to place 2 years in a row. No team records
were broken, but many individual records were met. Andrew Nyland set the
record for most tech falls in a year with 20. Ryan Robinson also tied the
record for fewest losses(2) and consecutive victories(39). Ryan also set
the record for best win percentage (95%), and most team points (284)in a
season. Ryan also set the record for most pins(115) , Most 1st
takedowns(129) and most team points (923) in a career. Daniel Mueller and
Ryan Robinson became the 49th and 50th Regional
Champions. Three wrestlers reached the 70 win club Milestone, Jose Deavila
(73), Daniel Mueller (77) and Ryan Robinson (140). Daniel Mueller was #6 in
pins for a year with (25.) The 2009-10 team
became the 26th winning team in history with a record of 13-8. The year was
highlighted with Daniel Mueller becoming the 51st Regional Champ and the
37th state Qualifier and the 8th State Place winner placing 4th at 215. We
had 3 sectional Qualifiers, Andrew Nyland, Luke Huster and Daniel Mueller.
No team records were broken, but many individual records were set. Andrew
Nyland os the new career record holder for most tech falls with 32. Daniel
Mueller tied the record for most wins in a season with 44. Mueller was also
5th all time in wins with 121, 4th in falls for a season with 32, 4th in
falls for a career with 79, 5th in career team points with 708 and 6th in
career takedowns with 210. Daniel will also leave the program of the record
holder of the quickest fall in history with a fall in 7 seconds. The team
had 7- 20 match winners with 6 returning next year. The 2010-11 team became the 27th
winning team in History with a record of 15-7. The year was highlighted by 2
Sectional qualifiers Josh Hannon and Andrew Nyland for the 2nd year in a
row. No team records were broken, but many individual records were set.
Andrew Nyland holds the career record for tech falls in a season (20) and in
a career with 36. Craig Bush is the new career record holder for most
takedowns in a career with 276. Craig bush is 13th all-time in wins in a
career with 87 and Andrew Nyland was 10th all-time with 94 wins. Andrew
Nyland is also 10th best all-time in takedowns in a career with 188.
