Reading
Our reading program consists of
three major parts. The first part is
vocabulary
and decoding. Students will be given six words every Monday
and
will take a 30 point quiz on Friday. They will also be assigned a
vocabulary
worksheet on Monday that is due every Tuesday. This
portion
counts for 25% of your student's grade.
Tuesdays
through Thursdays are dedicated to comprehension using
The
Reader's Handbook which helps students learn different reading
strategies.
There will be associated worksheets and notes that will be
taken
for a grade as well as quizzes on selected sections. This section
counts
for 50% of your students grade.
The
last portion of the reading curriculum is fluency. Students must
read
at least 6 books per trimester and pass a 10 question quiz per book.
In
addition, students will read a paragraph out loud to me. Students
will
be graded on pacing, pronounciation, stumbling over words, hesitations,
etc.
I am not looking for inflection. Please have your student read to you
for
practice. The more they read out loud, the better they will become.
On
most days, students will be given at least 10 minutes of class time to
read
their self-selected novel with approximately 30 minutes of silent
reading
on Fridays after their vocab quiz. They also have time in Advisory
to
read. This section accounts for the final 25% of their grade.
