About National Honor Society

The National Honor Society chapter of Collinsville High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious organization.

Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

Standards for selection are established by the national office of NHS and have been revised to meet our local chapter needs. Students in the eleventh and twelfth grades who have completed at least one semester at CHS are eligible for membership. For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. Those students who meet this criterion are evaluated by the faculty in regards to character. The faculty takes into consideration their professional reflections on a candidate’s character and leadership as well as reviewing school disciplinary records. Students who receive at least a “B” average in the faculty evaluation are invited to become pledges.

Pledges must: 1) be active members in at least three sponsor-approved school activities; 2) perform thirty (30) hours of sponsor-approved community service; 3) maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better; 4) regularly attend NHS meetings; and 5) exemplify the qualities of outstanding character.

At the end of the period of pledging, a Faculty Council appointed by the Principal determines whether each pledge has met the criteria necessary for membership. A majority vote of the Faculty Council is necessary for selection to membership. Pledges are notified regarding selection or non-selection.

Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance in all four criteria that led to their selection.
